Turmeric Paste for Dogs
Starting the new year off right by diving into making a turmeric paste (aka gold paste) for my dogs. Turmeric has many benefits for all ages and breeds of dogs. My dogs age ranged from just over a year to 13 and they all get it. Below is the recipe that I used but one WARNING the turmeric powder will stain anything it touches. I should have taken a picture but my hands were stained gold. If it gets on your counter be sure to clean it up immediately. The curcumin is what gives turmeric the gold color and where most of the benefits are so it is worth dealing with the staining.
Turmeric comes from the root or rhizome and in the same family as ginger. There are numerous benefits but here are just a few: anti-inflammatory, helps ease the pain and inflammation from arthritis, fight cancer, reduce Alzheimer's disease, and digestion. Coconut oil is anti-bacterial and a healthy fat. The black pepper enhances the bio-availability of turmeric.
1/4 cup Organic Turmeric Root Powder
1/2 cup Organic Coconut Oil
1.5 teaspoons ground black pepper
1 cup of water
*(recipe was from Dog Naturally)
Start my mixing the turmeric and the water in a pan over medium heat. Stir well. Let cook for 8 minutes or until a paste forms.
Then add in the coconut oil and pepper. Stir well. Remove from heat and let cool.
Store in a glass container or air tight container. Store in the fridge. Last two weeks.
Start by feeding a small amount. You can add to the top of your dog's food or feed separate. I am going to give this for a full week once a month.
Give it a try! Let me know how your dog liked it.
I personally take Turmeric capsules everyday and would recommend adding it to your supplement intake as well as your pets.
