Benefits of Walking Your Dog

Walking is a great form of exercise for you and your dog so why not do it together. Also as we all age it is beneficial for joints and muscles. The fresh air is good for the lungs and spirit. Take a deep breath of fresh air and notice how it reduces stress. When the weather is nice and the sun is out you can increase your vitamin D intake. Watch your dog when he goes for a walk and notice how he wants to smell everything. Sniffing on a walk is the dog's way of reading the newspaper. The different scents tells them which other dog in the neighborhood was there which may make your dog want to mark his spot to say that he was there too. Also he can smell if other animals were there like rabbits or squirrels. Depending on the breed of your dog they may attempt to track the squirrel. So as you can see there are a lot of exciting smells for a dog. Exerting energy on a walk will keep your dog from getting bored inside which may lead to poor behavior or wild running fits.

Exercise is one of the key ingredients in a healthy long life for your dog and yourself. Walking is easy on the joints and good for your heart. Grab a leash and take your dog for a nice stroll. It takes 2 weeks for an action to become a habit so stick with it and before you know it the daily hikes with your dog will be a habit you both look forward to.

Be responsible and clean up after your pet on walks. Bring water for both of you if it is warm out. In warmer weather it is best to walk early in the morning or early evening. Afternoon is the hottest part of the day so enjoy that part in the shade. Also use a harness not a collar to prevent damage to the trachea of your dog and choking him.
